How to Find the Perfect Pet Sitter

By Raven Flight

How to look for a pet sitter when you have moved to a new area. What questions to ask to make sure your pets recieve the best of care.

I recently moved and needed to find a new pet sitter. This was not going to be easy, I have 4 large dogs and 2 of them have special needs. First I stopped by to look at some of the kennels in my area but at some the pens were too small to keep my dogs together and the larger kennels cost $50 per dog per day, yikes! Here are some things I did to find the right dog sitter for me.

First I called the local Humane Society and asked if they had a list of pet sitters in my area. Next I called several of the local vet clinics to see if they recommended area sitters. One of the resources to find pet sitters in your local area is Pet-Sitters.biz. You can browse local pet sitter profiles online and email or phone them directly.

When looking for a new sitter service, be sure to ask if they bonded because these people will be coming into your home to feed, medicate and walk your pets so they will also have access to all of your belongings. Ask for and check references of previous clients. Also decide on how many times you want the sitter to visit your pets each day or do you want them to spend the night with your pets. Not all sitters will stay overnight so be sure to ask. Have all of your feeding, walking and medication schedules written out to show potential sitters, some may not feel comfortable pushing a pill down your rottweiler’s throat. Most sitters charge each time they come to your home though some charge per pet also and more if they have to medicate.

Have the new sitter come over and meet your pets. Let them walk the pets and feed them while you are there to see how comfortable they are with each other. Be sure to give the sitter your cell phone number, contact information and vet clinic information. You will not enjoy your time away from home if you are worried about your pets. Take your time making a decision, make sure this is a person that you feel comfortable with too.

I eventually hired one of the vet clinic assistants and she has worked out wonderfully for me. My dogs love her and are always happy to see her. She comes out 3 or 4 times a day, lets the dogs run for awhile, feeds them and plays with them. She does this for $45 a day. This is a much better deal for me than the kennels were money wise and for my dogs too. They get to stay in a familiar environment and don’t have the stress or potential illnesses that might be at the kennel.
