Is Pet Sitting Right for You?

Answer the following ten questions to see if pet sitting is a career choice that suits you:

Will you be comfortable staying in someone else's home to sit with their pet, if it is required?

Are you a self-starter who is able to promote your business to a successful level?

Will your schedule and obligations (family, current job) allow you enough time to devote to a pet sitting business?

Pet sitting can be challenging, but it can also be a personally rewarding and lucrative career.  This is especially true for people who love animals. But, even if you are an animal lover, that does not necessarily mean that pet sitting is right for you.

Ask yourself these important questions and answer honestly to see if pet sitting is a career choice that suits you: 

  1. Are you outgoing enough to meet clients in their own homes and discuss what you will and will not do and how much you expect to be paid?

  2. Are you confident enough to negotiate, or even to walk away if the pet owner is not willing to pay what you think the job is worth?

  3. Will you be comfortable staying in someone else's home to sit with their pet, if it is required?

  4. Are there certain types of animals that you are afraid of, allergic to, or would otherwise not be comfortable caring for? If so, how will you handle this situation?
 
  5. Are you willing to take the responsibility for someone else's pet, and can you afford insurance in case something goes wrong?

  6. Do you have any references, which would help pet owners feel comfortable allowing you into their home, and allowing you to care for their beloved pets?
 
  7. Can you afford the necessary start up costs (advertising, licenses, etc.)?

  8. Do you know what types of licenses are required for a pet sitting business?  How difficult will it be to obtain the appropriate applications?

  9. Are you a self-starter who is able to promote your business to a successful level?
  
10.  Will your schedule and obligations (family, current job) allow you enough time to devote to a pet sitting business?
